Summary
CGE is implementing a cooperative agreement with the U.S. State Department’s Middle East Partnership Initiative to create student councils in 102 schools in Yemen. Yemen’s Ministry of Education has established policies and guidance regarding the operation of councils, but very few have actually been made operational. Similar to the mothers’ and fathers’ councils that CGE has also helped to establish, student councils promote democratic processes in an educational system that is a microcosm of the larger Yemeni society. CGE is working with the Ministry of Education to implement an outreach campaign about the importance of student councils, including both girls and boys as leaders; helping promote elections at the classroom and school levels in the 77 schools in which CGE is already working as well as in 25 new schools; training new student leaders; and supporting councils in planning their first phase of activities.
