Combating GBV

The Gender Center integrates awareness-building regarding gender-based violence and harassment into many of its education projects. This encompasses but is not limited to physical, sexual, and psychological violence occurring in the family and community, including battery; sexual abuse of female children; dowry-related violence; marital rape; violence related to exploitation; and sexual intimidation, bullying and harassment at school, work, and elsewhere. FHI 360 also addresses these issues in its Guide to Mentoring and Life Skills, which is used as a resource by mentors who coach girls in project activities. More…

The Gender Center has been engaged in addressing human trafficking through several of its projects over the last decade. Human trafficking is one the greatest human rights violations of our time, and in order to address this complex socio-political and economic issue, NGOs, governments, and ordinary citizens must cooperate with each other across countries. Through its programs, the Gender Center has addressed human trafficking in its activities through awareness-building efforts, improving the implementation of laws to protect women and children from trafficking, developing and maintaining informational resource forums such as humantrafficking.org. Girls’ and Women’s Leadership

Girls and Womens Leadership

The Gender Center has long recognized the importance of providing women and girls with the skills and confidence to become leaders in their schools and communities. In societies where girls are discouraged or forbidden from filling public leadership roles, our projects have bucked societal and cultural norms by providing excellent leadership training to girls, who have seized leadership opportunities with tremendous zeal and achieved remarkable success. Similarly, we have linked women’s leadership with the promotion of girls’ education, including empowering mothers to become more engaged in school decision-making and planning that affects their daughters; increasing women’s knowledge of their rights and ability to advocate on behalf of girls’ education; and encouraging women to become formal role models and leaders to help girls succeed in school, the workforce, and in life.
